Reply 1988, the third installment of the Reply series, was a surprising success for tvN. Unlike other popular Korean films, it did not feature famous actors or extravagant investments. However, it garnered significant attention and praise, with many considering it the best of the three. Director Shin Won-Ho continued his collaboration with Reply 1988, while the script was written by Lee Woo-Jung. Interestingly, both had not gained recognition prior to their work on Reply 1997. The story is set in 1988 and revolves around a group of high school students: Duk-Sun, Jung-Hwan, Sun-Woo, Dong-Ryong, and Taek. They have been friends since childhood and are also neighbors. Their families are close, often gathering at Taek's room for enjoyable moments together. Duk-Sun's family is poor, living in a basement house. Her father, Dong-Il, lost his money when he stood as a guarantor for someone else's debt. Despite their financial struggles, Duk-Sun is optimistic and enjoys singing and dancing. She often clashes with her older sister, Bo Ra. Meanwhile, Jung-Hwan's family becomes wealthy overnight, and he is passionate about soccer. Sun-Woo is a model student at school and a caring older brother at home. His mother raised him and his younger sister alone after their father passed away. Dong-Ryong loves dancing and hangs out with his four friends. He dropped out of college due to poor academic performance. Taek, known as "God," is a famous baduk player. Since dropping out, Duk-Sun, Jung-Hwan, Sun-Woo, and Dong-Ryong are his only friends.
